The legend The Sicilian Moor's Head tells that an Arab soldier on duty in Palermo, around the year one thousand, seeing a beautiful girl on one of the balconies in the Kalsa district, he fell in love with her, the girl reciprocated his love and a passionate story of love was born.
The young soldier, however, did not tell the girl that he had a wife and children in his homeland, but only when he had to leave did he confess the sad truth to her. The sicilian girl, discovering everything, became furious and hurt in her heart, she devised a plan to make the young man stay there with her forever, so during the last night spent together she decapitated him, with his head she made a vase and planted some basil which grew very luxuriant. The neighbors, seeing this extraordinary growth, wanted similar vases, with the face of a Moor.
